About City on a Hill
My father, Carlos Vargas, was a painter. In the 1960s and 70s, that meant knowing how to tape drywall, float texture, and repair walls—skills that matter when you care about the final result. He didn't stop at painting though. He expanded into roofing and carpentry because understanding construction holistically made him better at every part of the job.
As a kid, I worked weekends and summers alongside him. I watched how he approached projects—methodical, detail-oriented, and always thinking about what the homeowner actually needed, not just what they'd asked for. By the time I made painting my profession, I had already learned the philosophy. When I founded City on a Hill in 2007, I brought that same foundation forward. Over 25 years in this trade, with a trained team that shares that commitment, we've built something simple: a business that shows up to do excellent work at an honest rate.
'The work speaks. Your presence during the job, the details you don't miss, the respect you show for someone's home—that compounds over time. That's what my father taught me.'
— Daniel Vargas, Owner
We've learned that painting and construction aren't just technical trades. They're trust-building trades. You're inviting someone into your home during one of the bigger decisions you'll make about it. We show up with respect for that responsibility.
Knowing the full picture matters. My father's move into sheetrock repair, carpentry, and roofing wasn't scope creep—it was wisdom. When you understand how construction layers interact, you avoid suggesting a paint fix for a structural problem. We ask better questions. Our clients avoid expensive mistakes later because we saw the real issue first.
Consistency builds everything. A team that has worked together for years notices what a new crew would miss. We've trained our staff the way my father trained me—through apprenticeship and example. That means fewer surprises, cleaner execution, and finishing on time because we've done similar work dozens of times before.
Insurance and accountability are non-negotiable. We're insured and we show it. It's not marketing language. It means if something goes wrong, you're protected. It means we've invested in doing things the right way, not cutting corners to beat a price.
When we come to your home, we protect it. We show up on time. We listen to what you're trying to accomplish, ask questions about what you've already tried, and give you honest recommendations even if they cost us time. We clean as we go, not leave it for the end. Our crew focuses on your project like it's the one that matters—because to you, it is.
If you've been disappointed by contractors before, you'll notice the difference in how we move and communicate. If this is your first time hiring a painting and construction company, you'll see what excellence actually looks like. We'd like to show you.
